Brooklyn Nets Training Facility
at Industry City
Brooklyn, New York
The new Brooklyn Nets Training Facility is located in historic Industry City at Bush Terminal along Brooklyn's Sunset Park waterfront. The Training Facility is the renovation and conversion of an existing 70,000 sq. ft. floor plate situated prominently atop a warehouse built at the turn of the 20thCentury.
The programmatic demands of the facility necessitated the removal of the existing roof, and the addition of a new 567,000 cubic foot volume housing two practice courts.  The interface of the new and the old provides a unique platform to architecturally showcase the Nets' brand in Brooklyn.
Aside from accommodating all day-to-day player amenities including locker, lounge, hydrotherapy, theater, weight and training areas; the practice facility also contains a VIP event lounge with full-service kitchen, a roof terrace and event space with immaculate views to downtown, league compliant media work and interview rooms, as well as over 30,000 square feet of conference, office, draft and war rooms for the Nets' front office and coaches.
Everything about the design of the new training facility celebrates the robust character of the existing building and Brooklyn’s rich industrial history.  The sleek lines of the dark metal exterior and wide expanse of glass at the North wall are carefully orchestrated to be in balanced contrast with the masonry and brick finishes of the original building.  The architecture of today enhancing the history of yesteryear -and vice versa.  The design will become a narrative for regeneration in this part of the city.
The interior design carries the same theme forward.   The new interior elements are set against the raw concrete frame and natural finishes of the original building.  Exposed ceilings, air ducts, and piping add to the overall industrial vibe.  And while the industrial theme lays the foundation for the design narrative, an overlay of softer natural finishes like recycled wood products and tiles create a harmonious spa-like environment.
The result is an overall design concept that fits comfortably within its surroundings, expresses the rich history of Brooklyn, builds upon the team’s new brand, and creates a first-class facility for the team and the community.
